GPS' Clay among Miss Basketball finalists for second straight year

GPS senior Chadarryl Clay was named one of three finalists for Division II-AA's Miss Basketball Award by the TSSAA Wednesday. Clay won the award last season and has been the leading scorer for the Bruisers this season. Whether or not Girls Preparatory School makes it back to the state championship final in two weeks, the Bruisers senior point guard, Chadarryl Clay, will have a chance to repeat. Wednesday morning the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association announced that Clay was among the three finalists in Division II-AA for the Miss Basketball Award. Bliss at Brainerd: Panthers win 6-AA title with last-second shot

Brainerd claimed the District 6-AA tournament crown Tuesday night in dramatic fashion with a 63-62 victory over East Ridge at High-Jackson Gymnasium. For the second night in a row at Brainerd High School, a last-second buzzer-beater decided the game, this time courtesy of the hosts Demetrius Kitchens putting a layup through the iron before time expired. East Ridge led 14-11 after one quarter, but a 12-point run by Brainerd to open up the second quarter put the Panthers ahead 25-19 at halftime. The Panthers allowed East Ridge to score only five points in the entire second period. Howard coach Walter McGary and the Hustlin' Tigers beat Tyner Monday night, 64-63 in the District 6-AA third-place game at Brainerd. Howard topped Tyner 64-63 in the final seconds of the consolation matchup for third place in District 6-AA on an improbable shot thrown up at the buzzer. Although not battling for first place, Tigers head coach Walter McGary recognized the importance of the consolation matchup, which determined seeding for the upcoming region tournament.
