Bliss at Brainerd: Panthers win 6-AA title with last-second shot

Brainerd claimed the District 6-AA tournament crown Tuesday night in dramatic fashion with a 63-62 victory over East Ridge at High-Jackson Gymnasium. For the second night in a row at Brainerd High School, a last-second buzzer-beater decided the game, this time courtesy of the hosts Demetrius Kitchens putting a layup through the iron before time expired. East Ridge led 14-11 after one quarter, but a 12-point run by Brainerd to open up the second quarter put the Panthers ahead 25-19 at halftime. The Panthers allowed East Ridge to score only five points in the entire second period. Vols to open 2012 football season vs N.C. State on Aug. 31

Tennessee announced Thursday that the Vols will open the 2012 football season in Atlanta against North Carolina State on Friday, August 31 in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. The game, televised nationally on ESPNU, will be part of a weekend doubleheader at the Georgia Dome with Auburn and Clemson squaring off on Saturday. GRAPEVINE, Texas - Before there will be significant changes to college football's postseason and how to determine a champion, there are plenty of options to be considered. Conference commissioners who run the Bowl Championship Series are just getting started on that process. "We're just trying to understand conceptually what the pieces are. ...
