Jonathan Browning is leaving his position as CEO of Volkswagen America for "personal reasons," officials announced Thursday morning. 

In a news release about new appointments to several management positions, Volkswagen officials said that Browning will be returning to the U.K. The change is effective Jan. 1.

Head of Volkswagen Global After Sales Michael Horn will take over as the new CEO, according to the news release. 

Horn is a business administration graduate who joined Volkswagen in 1990. In 1997, he took the lead for sales in northwestern Europe.

He has also worked as head of sales and marketing for premium-class vehicles and head of sales for Europe, according to the release. 

Volkswagen leaders also announced these following personnel changes:

—Axel Schulte-Hürmann will be the new head of after sales for the Volkswagen passenger cars brand. He is succeeding Horn in that position.  

—Terence Johnsson will become the head of overseas sales with Audi. 

—Ludger Fretzen will be the new head of Volkswagen passenger cars brand sales for North America.
