Also, JJ's is hosting a free open mic night tonight. From 7 to 9 p.m., comedians will take their turns at the mic, and the open mic music starts at 10 p.m.
"We will have free coffee and tea and stuff like that," Steelpan owner John Shoemaker said. "We are doing it for two different reasons: My staff probably needs the extra hours going into the holidays, and the other thing is Toys for Tots."
Shoemaker—who also owns music venue JJ’s Bohemia and Black Magpie Theory, which is a bar that used to be called O'Heiney's—said that anyone who comes and brings an unwrapped toy during the 100 hours will get a $5 gift certificate to one of his three businesses.
Toys can be for any age group of children, he also said.
Shoemaker said he's worked to help other charities, such as a women's shelter, over the years, but this is the first year collecting for Toys for Tots.
Shoemaker also gave a brief update on Black Magpie, which is currently closed and under construction. It will likely be closed through the end of the year.
This season is a slower time, so it's a good chance to take care of the remodeling, he said.
"We've got to remodel the bar a little bit and get ready to get a liquor license," he said.
