Sometimes, you just need to have a block party. And maybe that’s reason enough.

In the case of Light Up St. Elmo on Wednesday, Dec. 4, the goal is to bring together the St. Elmo community and the rest of the city for a celebration of what the neighborhood has to offer in terms of good people, businesses and culture.

The free event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with a host of activities for families and the community. The party commences at the 3900 block of St. Elmo Avenue.

Matt Skudlarek is co-planner for the event. He is also the owner and managing director of Pasha Coffee and Tea and a resident of St. Elmo.

He said Wednesday’s event is a sort of trial run.

"Basically, the whole thing is we’re trying to turn this into a quarterly block party kind of thing," he said. "Initially, this is sort of our passive run at it. It’s a little less formal."

The idea is that if enough people are drawn to the event in the cold December weather, more people would be willing to attend similar events in the spring, summer and fall.

In addition to a marketplace with a variety of local vendors, an Instagram photo contest will take place. Attendees are encouraged to tag images with #lightupstelmo for a chance to win a $20 gift card from Pasha Coffee and Tea.

The contest will be judged by Jaime Leah Smialek, co-planner of the event and owner of Our Ampersand Photography.

Pasha Coffee and Tea will also offer $1 Ghirardelli hot chocolates and a pour-over coffee demonstration and bar.

Here’s a look at some of the other activities planned:

—Christmas music and covers from Darren Self.
