Dan Howell plans to run for an open state legislative seat in 2014, according to a campaign announcement.

Howell, an executive assistant to Bradley County’s mayor and a former TV anchor with WDSI Fox 61, has taken a leave of absence from his job in the mayor’s office. Since 2010, Howell has served on the Tennessee Republican Party’s state executive committee.

"It is not a steppingstone to another position or career path; I see it simply as an opportunity to serve the community I love," Howell said in the announcement.

The 22nd District seat is currently held by state Rep. Eric Watson, who is stepping down next year to run for sheriff. The district covers parts of Bradley County and all of Polk and Meigs counties.

"Southeast Tennessee has always had good, conservative representation in Nashville, and I look forward to continuing that tradition," Howell said.
