Entrepreneurs Mike and Taylor Monen are adding New York-style pizza to their downtown restaurant Community Pie, which opened in January 2013 with the staple items of Neapolitan wood-fired pizza and homemade gelato.
"We had intentions of serving both New York-style pizza and Neapolitan pizza on the menu when we first opened but were not ready to debut both types then," Mike Monen said in a prepared statement. "We have spent the greater part of this year developing this menu option, and we are now proud and excited to offer it on our permanent menu."
Community Pie is located at 850 Market St. near Miller Plaza and also has a full bar that features specialty drinks and more than 40 craft beers.
The Monens also own local restaurants Taco Mamacita, Urban Stack Burger Lounge, and Milk and Honey and recently announced preliminary plans to add another restaurant on Main Street. Click here to read about that.
Community Pie will start offering New York-style pizza in addition to its other products Nov. 4.
The addition of New York-style pizza will allow for larger-size pizzas, slices, build-your-own pie options and the possibility of pizza delivery to the greater downtown area in the future, Mike said.
Mike and Taylor have spent the past couple years researching and developing their ideas and recipes for pizza.
"Taylor and I love New York City," Mike said. "Having spent a lot of time there, we naturally thought that a classic New York-style pizza would be a fun, fresh addition to the menu at Community Pie."
Employees at Community Pie will be testing the New York-style pizzas and seasoning the oven before debuting the offering to the public.
This week, they are donating and delivering all test pizzas to the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, which is a nonprofit organization that works to serve the local homeless population.
The kitchen serves three meals a day every day of the year at no cost to the consumer. Their kitchen is on track to serve 200,000 meals this year, Community Pie leaders said in a news release.
Community Pie will donate a total of 100 pizzas this week to help feed up to 800 people.
