It's the eve of Halloween, I do not have a costume, I'm not planning a fantastic Halloween party, and I think I'm OK with this. Is it lame if I dress up as an extremely more fabulous version of myself? Probably so. At any rate, my lack of having "real" Halloween plans shouldn't have an effect on you planning a wonderful Halloween bash, and I have just the dish for it. I love party planning and creating specific menus for each party that I plan—call me crazy. Party planning should be fun, easy and enjoyable; and if it's not ... sorry to say, but you're probably doing something wrong. Check out these tips for easy party planning; these could be useful for that Halloween party you're having tomorrow and didn't invite me to.
1/2 fresh baguette, sliced
4 tbsp butter
1 pear, sliced
3 oz brie cheese
Everyone likes grilled cheese sandwiches, right? Not the old, boring grilled cheese sandwiches that you remember eating when you were a kid. I'm talking about fancy, beautiful grilled cheese sandwiches with a variety of gourmet cheeses and delicious, crusty bread. Mouthwatering. Now, I know what you're thinking: Why would you serve a grilled cheese sandwich at a party? The answer—why not? Did I mention these are mini grilled cheese sandwiches? Mini foods are absolutely perfect for parties, and this dressed-up grilled cheese sandwich is just what you'll need. Serving small plates at any party will help soak up the alcohol your guests will be consuming, but it also won't be too filling for them. Halloween is tomorrow, so let's get to these sandwiches now.
First thing you'll want to do is slice your pear. If you'll be making quite a few sandwiches, you'll want to use more than one pear. Melt some butter in a pan, and add the pears plus a tablespoon of brown sugar. Stir and cook for about five minutes until the pears are caramelized.
While your pears are caramelizing (and smelling really great, I might add), begin to slice your baguette and brie cheese.
After everything is sliced, your pears should be finished, and it's time to prepare the sandwiches. To start, butter the tops of each slice and begin layering. Here's the order of the sandwich ingredients: butter, cheese, pears, more cheese and another slice of bread.
Brown on each side until nice and golden and the cheese is melting and gooey.
That's it. Now you're done. Can you believe it? It's just that easy to have a beautiful and delicious sandwich for your next party. Now, who's having a Halloween party that I can crash?
The original recipe can be found on the Little Leopard Book.
Additional notes: I used Bosc pears and would probably try a honey butter the next time I make these.
