A company and product that got its start in Chattanooga now has fewer local ties.
Chattanooga resident Judson Odom participated in local business pitch contest 48-Hour Launch in November 2011 with his product Slawsa, which is a combination of slaw and salsa. At that time, Slawsa won a business service package worth about $15,000.
The recipe was Odom's mother's, but Odom has since sold Slawsa to Julie Busha, who is now leading the company and will pitch the product to the panel of ABC's reality show "Shark Tank" in an effort to get more capital.
And although Busha is based in North Carolina, she still works with people in Chattanooga on a daily basis, she said via email.
"I do use KENCO as my warehouse, and McKee Foods assists from time to time in backhauling products to Chattanooga," she said. "Because Chattanooga is more centrally located geographically, it lends itself to be a more cost-effective point of distribution."
In the past two years, Slawsa's distribution has grown, and the product is now sold in the United States and Canada at more than 4,500 stores nationwide.
