It was a special afternoon for junior defensive end Davis Tull, who became Chattanooga’s all-time sack leader Saturday, but senior linebacker Wes Dothard also had himself quite a defensive performance.
Dothard, who posted a season-high 13 tackles in UTC’s win at Elon, made three crucial third-down stops, including a tackle for a six-yard loss late in the fourth quarter. He also broke up a pass in the 20-9 victory over the Phoenix, garnering Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The Mocs defense has not allowed a touchdown in a the last two games, and Dothard, who has a team-high 50 tackles on the season, has led that charge.
“That’s a big accomplishment for us,” Dothard said. “We pride ourselves on not letting teams score and stopping them in the red zone. I think we came up pretty big and did a lot of things on defense.”
The two-time All-American selection also has three tackles for loss and a sack on the year.
This is the fourth SoCon weekly award of Dothard’s career — the first since his sophomore season in 201 — and it’s the second week in a row a Moc has earned the league’s defensive honor. Chattanooga returns to action Saturday afternoon against The Citadel at Finley Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
