KNOXVILLE – Tennessee’s basketball team has been picked to finish third in the SEC by the media, the league announced on Wednesday.
The Vols were one of three teams to land at least one first-place vote and trailed only first-place Kentucky and Florida in the preseason rankings. UT finished fifth in the SEC last year after being picked fourth in the preseason.
In addition, three Tennessee players – guard Jordan McRae, forward Jeronne Maymon and forward Jarnell Stokes – all received preseason All-SEC honors. McRae was named to the five-man First-Team All-SEC squad while Maymon and Stokes were both placed on the eight-man Second-Team All-SEC team.
McRae finished second in the voting for the preseason SEC Player of the Year. He received five votes, trailing only Kentucky forward Julius Randle (11 votes). Stokes tied for third with two votes.
The Vols open up the preseason on Nov. 2 against Florida Southern in Knoxville. The regular season begins with a trip to Xavier on Nov. 12.
