After months of pursuit, including a promo video and tweets to the president and Oprah about the gig, soCro ultimately broke through to Big Boi via a Reddit AMA, in which fans are allowed to ask questions to artists.
In the thread, soCro asked four questions to Big Boi (see image below), one of which was about Waffle House, and, then, "Can I open for you in Chattanooga?"
He also included a link to a song.
Surprisingly, Big Boi responded. The answer to the Waffle House question was even featured on Rolling Stone’s website.
Big Boi eats at Waffle House "maybe two times a week," he said.
On Monday evening, soCro announced via Facebook that opening for Big Boi was a done deal.
"I’m absolutely thrilled," he said. "This is a major milestone for me. I feel incredibly fortunate for the opportunity to perform with an artist of Big Boi’s caliber—and even more so because I’ll be able to do it in Chattanooga."
SoCro, who lists Outkast among his influences, takes electronic elements of the European club scene and blends them with Southern hip-hop. He launched his musical career after moving to Chattanooga in 2005.
As for preparations, soCro said he wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary.
"I’m going home tonight, drink a few Schlitzes and practice my set," he said. "Tomorrow, I’ll probably try to take it easy and rest my vocals so I can give 110 percent at the show. After that, who knows? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for whatever other opportunities come my way."
Big Boi is performing tonight as a part of his Shoes for Running 2013 World Tour. General admission tickets are available for $28. VIP tickets—which include a meet and greet with the artist—are $75. All tickets can be purchased here.
