Comcast leaders recently released their Xfinity Family Sense app, which helps parents monitor children's online activity. That app is one of nine that Comcast leaders said help keep people connected via smartphone.
"There's so much changing, and there’s so much that people can do when they are on the go," Jim Weigert, Comcast vice president and general manager, said.
When Weigert recently saw information from the Pew Research Center about the use of mobile devices, he also saw the opportunity to tell area consumers about the array of apps that Comcast offers.
"I realized we never really told the whole story," he said about the available apps.
According to information released in June from Pew Research, 56 percent of American adults now have a smartphone of some kind.
And about 80 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds have a smartphone, according to the research.
Adults are turning to mobile devices to solve daily problems, Comcast leaders said. So the company offers a portfolio of apps that entertain consumers and help them communicate.
"Our suite of Xfinity apps gives customers more options than ever before," Weigert said. "We have almost a dozen apps that help extend your TV, Internet, digital phone and home automation options, providing more value than any other local provider is able to offer."
The new Xfinity Family Sense app allows families to guide children about how to protect their privacy and safety when using mobile devices.
It allows parents to monitor their children's social media and physical location. It also allows parents to see what apps their child has installed on the phone.
Under the current promotion, the app is free for 60 days and $9.95 per month after the trial period concludes.
Though the Family Sense app has a monthly service fee after the free trial period, all of the other Xfinity mobile apps are free to download and use.
Here is information on the other eight apps from Comcast.
This app allows customers to watch thousands of On Demand TV shows and movies. It also allows them to download shows and movies from Showtime, Starz, Encore and MoviePlex to their Apple or Android tablet or smartphone and watch them anytime, anywhere—even offline.
TV Remote app
This app allows customers to use their iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Android device as their remote control to search On Demand options and television listings. Users can also use it to set their DVR to record.
X1 Remote app
This is designed for the Xfinity TV on the X1 Platform, which is available in most markets, including Chattanooga. It allows users to control the device with voice commands. Customers can navigate On Demand, search for programs and tune in to content without their actual remote.
Paired with the AnyPlay media streamer, customers can watch live TV anywhere around their home when connected to an AnyPlay device. The app streams all TV channels over the home Wi-Fi network, so customers can turn their mobile device into another TV screen.
Customers can use their iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Android device to access their email and listen to voicemail messages. They can also send and receive free text messages using their home phone number.
Comcast recently announced that they have made about 300 Wi-Fi spots available around Chattanooga. This app helps customers find the closest one.
Constant Guard app
This app helps consumers securely connect to financial websites and securely manage passwords and credit card numbers.
With the Xfinity Home app, customers can look after their home with live video monitoring; check in on their family; adjust their thermostat; and turn on their lights from a laptop, tablet or smartphone. Click here for more on that.
