Beginning Oct. 1, millions of Americans who don't have health insurance can start enrolling for coverage through the federal Affordable Care Act, and locally based company American Exchange will be helping people enroll.
President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act will provide health care coverage to 30 million people.
Last summer, the Supreme Court ruled that the core of the health care reform act was constitutional.
Some of the act's requirements have already been implemented, and others will continue to be rolled out through 2018.
Under the act, marketplaces are being created, which will allow individuals and small business owners to shop for insurance coverage via Internet-based exchanges.
Individual coverage will be effective in January 2014.
American Exchange is a new local company whose leaders are helping residents nationwide connect with health insurance through marketplaces that will be open in October.
Leaders with the company are hosting community enrollment events, and the first one is scheduled for Oct. 5 at Liberty Tax on Dodds Avenue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Glenwood Neighborhood Association is sponsoring the event.
Consumers can sign up online, but it may be difficult to navigate the new online marketplaces, and several leaders suggested getting help.
Founder of American Exchange David Yoder said that the process of selecting benefits and getting enrolled should take between 30 and 45 minutes.
Anyone who goes to the enrollment event should bring the following information, and officials will help consumers make decisions about benefits, networks and costs.
—If insured, bring a list of current benefits and information, including monthly premium, deductible, doctor copay and insurance company
—A list of current prescriptions
—A list of doctors
—An estimate of 2014 income (modified adjusted gross income)
—Payment information (American Exchange doesn't accept premium payments. They take information for the insurance company to bill to customers.)
