Today is Park(ing) Day in downtown Chattanooga. This worldwide event is designed to transform parking spaces into temporary public parks.
About 40 area businesses and organizations are constructing pop-up urban parks across the city from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Expect everything from cornhole to hammocks, cupcakes, gelato, fitness, pianos and more. Each park will be different.
Park(ing) Day was created by a San Francisco-based art and design studio to encourage communities to rethink the way streets are used and reinforce the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure to promote healthy, vibrant and walkable urban areas.
This is Chattanooga’s sixth year participating in Park(ing) Day but the first planned by River City Company.
—Chattanooga Christian School will be bringing a high school choir to perform on Main Street between 12:10 and 12:15 p.m.
—Gigi’s Cupcakes will offer free cupcakes throughout the event.
—Big River Grille has chalk painting.
—Outdoor Chattanooga is setting up a backcountry campsite in their park.
—Community Pie will have gelato samples from Milk and Honey.
—Buddy Shirk will play piano in his Main Street piano park.
—Color Cloud Hammocks will offer a hammock park to rest your bones.
