With an eye out for House incumbents who could experience a rare defeat in next year's primary elections, staff for the Washington, D.C., newspaper Roll Call put together a compilation of five races to watch across the nation.
Tennessee's 4th District Republican primary made the list.
Seeking a third term, Rep. Scott DesJarlais faces a challenge from state Rep. Jim Tracy. The newspaper breaks down a trio of factors that could result in a defeat—continuing fallout from revelations regarding his decade-old divorce, the exit of state Rep. Joe Carr from the primary in exchange for a Senate run and dismal rounds of fundraising compared to the incumbent's challenger.
"Tracy has more than $650,000 in the bank—with DesJarlais' paltry $88,000 in cash-on-hand," the report reads. "The numbers cast serious doubt whether DesJarlais can even be competitive in the primary—let alone win it."
Roll Call isn't the first D.C. publication to cast DesJarlais on shaky ground. Last month, the congressman was placed at the top spot of the National Journal's "Top 10 Lawmakers Who Could Lose a Primary Next Year" list.
The 4th District Republican primary is Aug. 7, 2014.
