Hamilton County commissioners elected Commissioner Jim Fields to serve as the group's vice chairman Wednesday in a 5-4 vote.
The vote came one week after the group failed to choose a vice chairman after holding three votes on the matter, each of which resulted in a three-way tie. The group continued their recessed meeting by holding a fourth vote between the three nominees, Commissioners Tim Boyd, Chester Bankston and Fields.
The fourth vote resulted in yet another three-way tie.
At that point, Chairman Fred Skillern said he would hold one more vote before opening the floor to additional nominations.
On the fourth roll call, Commissioner Marty Haynes switched his preference, voting for Fields instead of Bankston, as he had four times before. The result was enough for the group to hold a final vote between the top two vote-getters, Fields and Boyd.
The five commissioners who voted for Fields were Joe Graham, Larry Henry, Haynes, Skillern and Fields himself. Voting in favor of Boyd were Warren Mackey, Greg Beck, Bankston and Boyd himself.
Following the vote, Fields was sworn in as vice chairman.
In the event of Skillern's absence, Fields will preside over commission meetings as chairman.
