Former Hamilton County Commission Chairman Larry Henry announced Wednesday his plans to seek election to the position of Circuit Court clerk next year.
Henry, who has served on the commission for 12 years, made his announcement on the steps of the county courthouse. He was joined by about a dozen supporters—primarily his family; county staff members; and Commissioners Joe Graham, Tim Boyd and Marty Haynes.
"It is my desire to effectively serve the public with the utmost equality and professionalism and to ensure that the office of the Circuit Court clerk functions efficiently in its service to the Hamilton County court system," Henry said.
The clerk maintains the county's Circuit and Sessions Civil Courts. Current clerk Paula Thompson announced in July she would not seek re-election to the term-limited post.
Earlier this week, Hamilton County School Board Chairman Mike Evatt announced he would also be seeking election to the clerk's office. Evatt has served on the board since 2010.
The Hamilton County primary is May 6, 2014.
The general election is Aug. 7.
Updated @ 9:37 a.m. on 9/5/13 to correct a factual error: Larry Henry is no longer the chairman of the Hamilton County Commission, as originally reported. He announced in August that he would not seek another term at the post.
