Hamilton County School Board Chairman Mike Evatt announced Monday he will seek election to the Hamilton County Circuit Court clerk position next year.

Evatt, who has served on the board since 2010, revealed his intentions in a news release.

"I firmly believe my tenure as a member and current chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Education has been productive and has contributed to the growth of a school system that is poised to meet the challenges of preparing our young people for the future," Evatt said. "I now propose to apply that same mindset of service leadership and management skills to this position."

The clerk maintains the county's Circuit and Sessions Civil Courts. Current clerk Paula Thompson announced in July she would not seek re-election to the post, which is not term-limited.

The position pays $101,000 per year.

So far, Evatt is the only candidate to declare an official bid for the clerk's office. Commission Chairman Larry Henry has expressed interest in the clerk's office but has not made an official decision.

The Hamilton County primary is May 6, 2014.

The general election is Aug. 7.
