Compiled here is a list of what this author has been listening to this week.
A Spotify playlist is below with some of my favorite tracks of the week. What have you been listening to?
Baby Baby, "Keep on Dancing"
I missed the soCro/Baby Baby show at JJ’s Bohemia last weekend, but I’ve had Baby Baby on repeat all week, anyway. This Atlanta-based band creates rocking earworms that leave you tapping and grinning—a hallmark symptom of good music. I’ve included a few tracks in the playlist below, and you must watch the music video for "Keep on Dancing."
Bob Dylan, "Self Portrait"
For the 10th bootleg in the Bob Dylan Bootleg Series, you would expect something special. We received a wonderful gift. Dylan’s 1970 album "Self Portrait" was not his best effort, redeemed somewhat by "New Morning" a few months later. With "Another Self Portrait," we hear a more complete vision of both albums over two CDs of demo recordings. The set also includes a bonus concert recorded at Isle of Wight in 1969. Highlights include wonderful versions of "Time Passes Slowly" and "Went to See the Gypsy." A much-loved, underrated song called "Spanish Is the Loving Tongue" is gorgeously illustrated in a solo piano performance, as is a version of "When I Paint My Masterpiece." The highlight for me is a simple acoustic version of a song called "Pretty Saro."
Ah, Eminem is back with his first new release since 2010’s "Recovery" album. The new album is set for release soon. A new single called "Berzerk" samples Billy Squier’s "The Stroke," and in it, he encourages growing your "beard out just weird out and go berserk all night long." He also references Kim Kardashian as being the "ugly Kardashian." Give the song a few listens. It really is brilliant, but it takes time to realize it.
