The Chattanooga volleyball team kicks off the 2013 season Friday when the Mocs travel to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Invitational.
“We are excited to get the season underway,” head coach Travis Filar said. “Georgia Tech is a great program with a great volleyball atmosphere. Playing at O’Keefe Gymnasium will be fun and exciting for our team.”
The Mocs get started at Noon meeting against former Southern Conference foe College of Charleston, now members of the Colonial Athletic Association. The mid-day matchup marks the 35th meeting between the two programs — CofC has dominated the series 26-9.
After reuniting with Charleston, the Mocs will take on the hosting Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m. Georgia Tech, 19-12 in 2012, finished a perfect 3-0 in last year’s Georgia Tech Invitational. Chattanooga will look to derail the Yellow Jackets and improve on its 3-8 record against Tech.
UTC wraps up its opening weekend of competition with a 10:30 a.m. matchup with Florida A&M on Sunday. After having Saturday to rest, the Mocs square off against the Rattlers for the first time in program history. FAMU finished 15-11 in 2012, including a perfect 10-0 mark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
“We’re facing a group of great teams this weekend and I feel good about this team,” Filar said. “We’re talented and I am excited to see how we perform on the court.”
The Mocs were picked to finish fifth in the SoCon by the league’s coaches, and enter the 2013 season with the fifth-best win improvement mark from the 2011-12 seasons.
