The best from Week 0:
Sophomore JaVaughn Craig, McCallie: In what was his first career start at quarterback, Craig took the city of Cleveland by storm, running and throwing his way to 376 total yards and four touchdowns, while his team cruised to a 55-35 victory over the Blue Raiders. Craig completed 15 of his 19 pass attempts for 285 yards, including touchdown passes to seniors C.J. Fritz and Spencer Morgan, while also running for 91 yards and a pair of scores on 14 carries.
Senior Austin Herink, Cleveland: While the Blue Raiders’ underwhelming defense was exposed in their 20-point, Week 0 loss to McCallie, the team’s offense turned out to be as good as advertised, especially senior quarterback Austin Herink. With absolutely no help defensively, Herink did his best to keep his team in the game, throwing for 471 yards and four touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder finished with scoring strikes of 61, 25, 20 and 4 yards, while also running for a first-quarter touchdown.
Senior Tre Herndon, East Hamilton: The 6-foot, 175-pound athlete didn’t get his hands on the ball a ton in the Hurricanes’ 14-12 win over Signal Mountain, but when he did, he took advantage. Herndon, a Vanderbilt commitment, returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 90 yards for the go-ahead score, and later blocked the potential game-winning field goal in the closing seconds, securing the victory for his team. He also hauled in one reception for 16 yards to convert a crucial third-and-long situation in the first quarter.
Senior James McClellan, Signal Mountain: The Eagles rode their 6-foot, 250-pound workhorse throughout Friday’s defensive struggle against East Hamilton. McClellan, a fullback, piled up 153 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries, scoring one of Signal Mountain’s two touchdowns in the team’s 14-12 loss. The Eagles, who completed just one pass on the evening — a 26-yard scoring strike — racked up more than 275 yards on the ground.
Senior Jim Cardwell, Boyd-Buchanan: Cardwell came up big in the Buccaneers ’43-41 win over Red Bank on Saturday night at Finley Stadium, accounting for 317 yards and four touchdowns in the team’s narrow victory. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound signal caller threw for 175 yards and a pair of scores, while also piling up 142 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
