The Chattanooga women’s soccer team kicks off its 2013 regular season this evening when it hosts visiting Austin Peay at Finley Stadium (7 p.m. ET).
The Mocs, looking to improve on last season’s 3-13-1 campaign, return their No. 2 leading scorer from a season ago, sophomore Hannah Wyatt, to the lineup. She’ll play a mix of midfield and forward for UTC.
Junior Crystal Mackezyk provides a strong presence in the midfield, while senior Andria Aurand anchors a veteran backfield. Sophomore Lauren Thomas and veteran Taylor Mangrum will battle it out for the starting spot between the posts.
Austin Peay, which has advanced to the finals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament two times in the last three years, return a strong core from last season’s 12-9-1 team. Senior Tatiana Ariza is fourth on the Lady Govs’ all-time scoring chart, needing two more points to become just the fourth player in APSU history to reach 100 points.
The last time these two teams met, in 2012, resulted in a 4-1 Austin Peay victory in Clarksville, Tenn. Former Lady Moc Becca Smith scored the team’s lone goal in the lopsided loss. The Lady Govs hold a 4-3 advantage over Chattanooga in the all-time series, and they’ve won each of the last three matches. UTC’s last win over APSU was a 4-3 victory at home in 2009.
