EPB honored this year's Black History Month essay contest winners Thursday evening during their annual awards banquet.

In addition to the winners of the contest, Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger also attended the awards ceremony.

Students throughout the community were invited to compete in the ninth annual Black History Month essay contest, in which they were asked to write an essay detailing contributions they will make to the African-American story. Leaders decided on this topic because whether a student's talent is art, writing, music, leadership or kindness, each one has the power to make an impact, regardless of ethnicity, according to a prepared statement.
