Moses Freeman, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, handily defeated incumbent Councilman Andraé McGary Tuesday to become the representative-elect for District 8 on the Chattanooga City Council.
Voters cast 746, or 61 percent, of ballots in favor of Freeman.
McGary, who will be succeeded after having served only one term, scored 470 votes (38 percent).
Freeman, who is 74, has been involved in numerous organizations, boards and community initiatives in the city over the decades. Freeman was one of the first candidates to declare a bid for this year's City Council election last August.
Freeman will be sworn into a four-year term April 15.
District 8 covers areas of downtown, Amnicola, Avondale, Bushtown and Eastside.
