Chip Henderson was elected to represent District 1 on the Chattanooga City Council Tuesday, scoring a majority of votes and defeating three opponents.

Henderson, a construction company owner, pulled down 1,120 votes (52 percent) and defeated candidates Jim Folkner, Pat Hagan and Tom McCullough.

Henderson will succeed Councilwoman Deborah Scott, who announced in October she would not seek re-election to the City Council after serving a single term. Scott is known for her rigid attention to items put before the council, often casting a lone dissenting vote on measures.

District 1 includes areas of Hixson, Lookout Valley, Moccasin Bend, Mountain Creek and Northwoods.

Henderson will be sworn in as councilman April 15.

Updated @ 3:45 p.m. on 4/9/13 to correct a factual error: The new city government leaders will be sworn into their posts April 15, not April 19, as originally reported.
