Teachers, day care employees, educators and other school staff are eligible for free tax preparation at Liberty Tax Service during the business' Educator Appreciation Days.

All school employees, including school bus drivers, who are new customers are eligible to have their taxes prepared for free Feb. 25 through March 3 at Liberty Tax in Chattanooga and Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.

“Employees of our education systems deserve all the help they can get,” Chad Chastain, owner of Liberty Tax Service, said in a prepared statement. “We have appreciation days to show our respect for everyone in our education system. The future of our country and our economy depends greatly on their hard work and dedication.”

The American Taxpayer Relief Act extends teachers' classroom expense deductions through the end of 2013. The deduction, which expired after 2011, allows eligible educators who spend their own money on classroom supplies to deduct (above-the-line) qualified expenses up to $250 paid out-of-pocket during the year.

Eligible educators are considered as kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers, instructors, counselors, principals or aides who works at least 900 hours in either a public or private school. The adjustment for these expenses, of no more than $250, can be claimed whether or not the taxpayer can itemize.
