HUMBLE, Tex. — Sophomore Liam Johnston (Dumfries, Scotland) opened the spring portion of Chattanooga’s golf schedule with a three-under par 69 at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship on Friday. Johnston led the Mocs to a 2-over par 290 total, tied for fourth with UT Arlington and East Carolina.
Johnston turned in three birdies and 15 pars. He recorded his birdies on three of his first six holes and laid out 12 pars from there. He is tied with five others two shots behind Texas individual Brax McCarthy at 67 in first.
Johnston was followed by Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) with a 72 and Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) at 73 (+1). Benni Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria) rounded out the team score with a 76, while Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) battled his putter and shot the drop score of 77.
No. 3 Texas leads the event with a 3-under par 285. Baylor (286) and Charlotte (289) are second and third, respectively. The event is being played at Redstone Golf Club on its tournament course, which is the site of the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston Open.
