Chattanooga’s Manuel Barroetavena has been selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played through Feb. 10, the league office announced Tuesday. Barroetavena opened the year with seven straight singles victory and has helped lead the Mocs to a 5-2 start this spring.
The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, opened with four consecutive wins at the No. 3 singles spot, posting straight-set victories over Paul Schuette of Georgia Tech and Tennessee Tech’s Artem Tarasov before grinding out a three-set (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) win over Belmont’s Fernando Mussolini.
Barroetavena moved to the No. 1 against North Alabama, topping Matt Feury (6-0, 6-3), and the senior had two wins at No. 2 over the weekend—victories over Austin Peay’s Jasmin Ademovic and Murray State’s Tyler Jeffers.
Barroetavena, the Steve Baras Memorial Scholarship recipient, has either clinched the match point for the Mocs, or has been the first to finish a singles match in each of the team’s seven outings this spring.
In doubles action, Barroetavena has teamed up with fellow senior Jackson Tresnan, and the duo is 4-1, including a 3-0 mark at the No. 2 spot.
The Mocs return to the court next weekend when they host Lee University at the Champions Club on Saturday.
