As of Monday, Chattanooga company Terenine is now known as Cloudswell. The name change represents a shift in the business, with leaders moving their customers' data into the cloud.

“Cloud computing is a revolutionary development, allowing for secure, scalable and affordable technology that location-based hosting cannot provide,” Cloudswell President Dave Carney said. “This change will greatly expand our offerings and allow us to bring our customers to the forefront of this technological innovation.”

The company, which has about 80 employees, had been storing data for area companies in large servers in four rooms in their Riverside Drive location.

Now, they will move that information to the cloud and continue their application development services. They will also focus on data security and compliance, leaders said.

The move to the cloud is a money-saver, leaders said.

Research showed that the switch to the cloud can save the company 20 to 30 percent on costs, Carney said.

“It will save us money that we will pass along to customers,” he said.

Moving to the cloud also allows additional flexibility and makes it easier for the local company to partner with businesses outside of the area, Roger Hale, the company’s chief information security officer, said.

“It’s not focused on what is within these four walls; we are literally opening up the environment to our customers,” he said.

Cloudswell leaders said they plan to partner with their customers on timing of the switch, which will take about a year and involve multiple projects.

The move to the cloud also allows leaders to increase speed to market in their application development, they said.

In 2011, the Chattanooga Times Free Press wrote an article about Terenine, alleging that it and the other businesses in that office were a front for an unlicensed Internet payday loan organization.

But Carney said those allegations have nothing to do with the name change.

“We adopted a new brand, Cloudswell, to signal our expansion and improvement to our services and capabilities to better meet clients' continuously changing needs,” he said. “Cloudswell represents our transition to a cloud computing-based business, so we can provide our clients with enhanced, secure, scalable and affordable infrastructure that go far beyond the services we provided as a location-based hosting company. We enjoy strong relationships with many members of the Chattanooga community and pride ourselves on our client-driven business."
