The Chattanooga men’s tennis team improved to 4-1 this spring with Sunday’s 7-0 victory over North Alabama at the Hixson Racquet Club. The Mocs, who won all 10 matches on the afternoon, are off the program’s best start in over 10 years.

With the doubles point already decided, seniors Roberto Vieira and Chris Smith were in a battle at No. 1 with Aliaksei Kavalenak and Matt Fuery, but the UTC duo pulled out a 9-8 win, taking the tiebreaker 8-6. Smith and Vieira improved to 3-1 this spring in doubles action.

Smith was impressive at No. 2 in singles as well, capturing his first win this spring. He only dropped one game in his straight-set (6-0, 6-1) win over Guillaume Dechoz. Senior Manuel Barreotavena moved up to No. 1 on Sunday, scoring a (6-0, 6-3) win over Fuery, improving to 4-0 this spring.

Senior Ankit Chopra needed three sets to defeat Rob Whitsitt (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3)) at No. 3, while senior Jackson Tresnan won his battle with Kavalenak (7-5, 6-4) at No. 4. Sophomore Pavels Grigorjevs and freshman Gino Delavalle also won singles matches.

The Mocs return to the court next weekend when they host Austin Peay on Friday at the Hixson Racquet Court.
