The Chattanooga women’s tennis team opens its 2013 spring schedule with a pair of matches this weekend. The Lady Mocs host Kennesaw State this evening at the Hixson Raquet Club, and they welcome Belmont on Saturday.
UTC is coming off a 16-6 season in 2012, the most wins for the program since 1999. Head coach Jeff Clark, in the sixth year of his second stint as coach of Lady Mocs, is five wins shy of 100 dual victories. He’s compiled a 95-84 record in nine total years at Chattanooga.
“We are excited about starting our season on Friday night,” Clark said. “We face a good, experienced team in Kennesaw State. I know our girls will be ready to play.”
The Lady Mocs return four letter winners, in addition to adding five newcomers to their 2013 roster. Senior Jenna Nurik, a three-time All-Southern Conference selection, has a 15-7 record at No. 1, while sophomore Kaylene Chadwell returns after earning SoCon Freshman of the Year honors with a 16-5 dual record in 2012. She was 7-1 at No. 2 and 8-2 in SoCon matches.
Junior Alexa Flynn, 11-7 in 2012, is a two-year starter, while sophomore Claire Mulyadi, who joined the team in Jan. 2012, finished up 9-8 in singles action last spring.
The Lady Mocs’ newcomers are listed as the No. 9 mid-major recruiting class in the country by TennisRecruiting.net, including four-star signees Kelsey Coots, Kaite Polk, and Kayla Jones. Three-star prospect Alison Stourie and Oklahoma State transfer Jovana Pecovski are also new additions for UTC.
The Lady Mocs captured a 7-0 victory in last year’s meeting with Belmont on Feb. 4, when Nurik, Chadwell and Flynn all had singles wins, and Nurik and Chadwell teamed up for a doubles victory.
