The Chattanooga wrestling team suffered a 21-17 dual to Cleveland State University on Sunday. The Mocs won five matches, including bonus points in two wins, but a forfeit and a pin dropped UTC’s overall record to 4-6 on the season.
The dual started at 174, which was a rematch from the Southern Scuffle between Mocs junior Jake Young and the Vikings’ Xavier Dye. Young won the first bout in overtime, but lost 7-5 on Sunday. Dye scored two takedowns in the first period, and another in the third, for the win.
Senior Robert Prigmore got the Mocs on the board with a 4-1 win over Corbin Bone at 184. Senior Niko Brown put UTC ahead with his 13-3 major decision over Nick Anthony at 197. Brown came into the match ranked No. 18 in the nation and scored his team-high 20th win of the year.
Sophomore Kevin Malone put gave Chattanooga a 10-3 advantage following his 6-1 decision over Amon Willis at heavyweight. UTC looked to be in position to break things open with sophomore Nick Soto — 15th in the nation — taking the mat at 125, but he was upset by Ben Willeford in a 5-4 loss.
The Mocs had to forfeit at 133 and lost again at 141. Senior Dean Pavlou dropped his match with Nick Flannery 5-3. UTC cut its deficit to 15-14 after junior Alex Hudson posted a 10-22 major decision over Mike Mencini at 149.
Cleveland State clinched the win with a first-period pin at 157. Matt Donohue scored a takedown against sophomore Trey Stavrum and recorded the fall at the 1:10 mark. Senior Josh Condon closed out the match with a 10-6 win at 165.
The Mocs return to action next weekend for Legends Weekend when UTC hosts The Citadel on Saturday. Match time is set for 2 p.m. inside Maclellan Gym. Chattanooga will honor alumni throughout the match as part of the Legends Weekend celebration.
