The Chattanooga men’s tennis team captured its first win of the spring season on Saturday, a 4-3 victory over visiting Tennessee Tech at the Hixson Raquet Club.
The Mocs (1-1), who suffered a 5-2 setback to Georgia State on Friday, won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.Seniors Robert Vieira and Chris Smith rolled to an 8-1 win over Tennessee Tech’s Syrym Abdukhalikov and Alejando Augusto at No. 1, while freshman John Peacey and senior Stephen Crofford clinched the opening point with an 8-5 win at No. 3
“We played much better today than Friday,” said head coach Carlos Garcia. “We had some weaknesses exposed on Friday, but we were able to work on them and make some adjustments. I think we saw a much better effort today.”
UTC put the match out of reach after winning the first three singles matches in straight sets. Senior Manuel Barroetavena started things off with a (6-2, 6-0) win over Artem Tarasov at No. 3, and the Mocs increased their lead to 3-0 when senior Jackson Tresnan scored a (6-1, 6-1) win over Othon Lima at No. 6.
Chattanooga, which clinched the match when Freshman Luke Saunders defeated Alvaro Cintas (6-3, 6-3) at No. 5, returns to action next Sunday when it hosts Belmont at the Hixson Raquet Club.
