There are handmade, heirloom advent calendars and store-bought, paper calendars, red and green calendars and striped calendars and polka dotted calendars.

Regardless of the form, the excitement of opening a package every day to count down the days until Christmas never fails to delight both the young and the old.

The Chattanooga gift advent calendar offers a daily suggestion for a local purchase to bring a little piece of the Scenic City to the holiday hoard under the tree.

Day 24
'Twas the day before Christmas, and all through your mind, ran the thought of how many perfect presents you were able to find. If ever there was a time to use the ease of the Internet to make life more convenient, it is Christmas Eve.

Don’t rush to the mall, scramble through the picked-over shelves and wait in the lengthy checkout lines, fretting all the while about the gift you had to settle for buying.

Instead, sit down at the computer for 10 minutes or so with a mug of coffee, browse the local deals on Groupon, print a copy of your purchased coupon and place it in an envelope under the tree. Then, spend the rest of the day with your family and friends.

For the next eight days, the storied, floating Delta Queen Hotel is offering five different options for one- or two-night stays in either standard or deluxe rooms. One package even includes a holiday dinner, good through Jan. 6.

If you need a vacation from the holiday vacation or an excuse to plan a romantic weekend with a significant other, this is just your ticket.

Where: The hotel is docked at Coolidge Park on the Tennessee River
How much: Packages range from $69 to $184
