There are handmade, heirloom advent calendars and store-bought, paper calendars, red and green calendars and striped calendars and polka dotted calendars.

Regardless of the form, the excitement of opening a package every day to count down the days until Christmas never fails to delight both the young and the old.

The Chattanooga gift advent calendar offers a daily suggestion for a local purchase to bring a little piece of the Scenic City to the holiday hoard under the tree.

Day 18
Just as a gift certificate to a local restaurant can introduce a person’s palette to a new feast of flavors, a similar present to the Chattanooga Language School can unlock new worlds with not only undiscovered cuisine, but also unknown traditions, places and history.

The language barrier can be one of the most challenging pieces of the travel puzzle and can up the ante on the intimidation factor of venturing to parts of the globe where the people don’t speak English.

The Chattanooga Language School offers private and semi-private sessions, as well as group classes in six- and 10-week cycles for Spanish, French, German, Mandarin and sign language.

Upon request, instruction in Arabic, Italian, Portuguese and English as a second language can be provided.

Most languages are broken into two beginning levels, an intermediate level, and an advanced or conversation level. Classes meet once or twice a week for an hour, an hour and a half, or two hours.

Give a friend the invaluable tool to see Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família in Barcelona, the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum, the Pyramids of Giza and the cliff-side towns of Cinque Terre.

Where: Business Development Center, 100 Cherokee Blvd., Suite 307
How much: $30 per hour of private instruction, $20 per hour of semi-private instruction and $10 per hour for a group class (purchase classes online)
