A local Red Cross volunteer, Michael Puryear, is being redeployed to the Northeast to aid Hurricane Sandy victims.

By the numbers

91,000: Have been provided health services and emotional support

7.9 million: Have been fed

6.1 million: Have been given relief items

Puryear was first deployed to the Northeast in late October.

Typically, volunteers stay for two weeks, but Puryear stayed for six. Upon returning to Chattanooga, he volunteered to be redeployed, giving up Christmas with his family. Puryear is relieving another volunteer so that that volunteer can be home for the holidays.

Puryear is one of 20 people from the area who has been deployed. Some have already returned, officials said.

Hurricane Sandy has been the Red Cross' largest relief effort in more than five years.
