There are handmade, heirloom advent calendars and store-bought, paper calendars, red and green calendars and striped calendars and polka dotted calendars.

Regardless of the form, the excitement of opening a package every day to count down the days until Christmas never fails to delight both the young and the old.

The Chattanooga gift advent calendar offers a daily suggestion for a local purchase to bring a little piece of the Scenic City to the holiday hoard under the tree.

Day 5
Artist Peggy Petrey describes one of her early and most treasured childhood memories as hunting through the trash in pursuit of items that had been carelessly tossed aside but could, with her clever skills, be made into something better.

Today, Petrey applies the same finders-keepers attitude to her handmade jewelry. She collects discarded license plates, hand presses the metal, coats it in layers of paint and then sands down the surface. The finalized pieces serve as a fascinating study in color and shape.

The cuffs and double-dome earrings, available at Blue Skies, come in vibrant oranges, yellows and reds and lucid blues and greens, all outlined with black and silver.

Where: 30 Frazier Ave.
How much: Cuffs range from $30 to $33 and earrings range from $32 to $50
