After five years in business, Niko's Southside Grill will be closing on Dec. 22, co-owner Amy Kyriakidis said Monday morning.

Amy's husband and co-owner of the business, Nick Kyriakidis, injured his spinal cord last March, and he is going to take time off to focus on rehabilitation, she said.

"We have loved every bit of it," she said of their time running the Southside business. "We have loved being a part of the Southside community."

The businesses' 28 employees recently received the news.

Some of them may be able to find work at other downtown restaurants, and others may stay in touch with Amy and Nick, who may eventually open another restaurant, Amy said.

"In the next year, Nick is probably going to do another business plan," she said.

Until Dec. 22, the Niko's team is going with "business as usual," she said.

They have a lot of Christmas parties booked, and it was important to the owners to work those events, Amy said.

"More than anything, we just want to tell people thank you," she said. "It's very emotional for us. It's been a great community to work with."

Local restaurateur Mike Monen, along with some other business partners, has purchased the space where Niko's is located, he said Monday.

Monen said the move is a real estate investment, and details about what they will do with the space aren't yet available.
