The Mainx24 gossip

Psst! There’s a rumor going around Chattanooga ....

Listeners of last night’s SportsTalk broadcast on TalkRadio 102.3 got an earful of a showdown that’s set to go down this weekend at Mainx24.

Dr. B, a well-known authority on area basketball and otherwise known as Gary Haskew, traded choice words with Nina Coppinger, the wife of Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger.

The quarrel is over the second-place spotlight for Mainx24’s three parade grand marshals. Haskew returns this year with his beloved pooch as the herald of the Mutt Strut, while Coppinger and her granddaughter will lead the inaugural Stroller Strut.

Though Haskew was initially miffed over his dimmed wattage, the two maestros collectively conceded to the event’s main buzz to Oreo, the East Ridge goat who last week was named grand marshal of the EPB Southside Parade.

However, the title of runner-up is up for grabs, and Dr. B and the Hamilton County mayoress were perhaps less than demure in vying for appellation.

The pair traded snipes over chosen modes of parading—one of the marshals is apparently opting for a golf cart this year—and goaded each other into a philanthropic challenge: Haskew plans to donate $1 for every dog strutting behind him to DOGood for a Dog Friendly Chattanooga, and Coppinger will similarly contribute $1 for every stroller rolling behind her to Chattanooga Room in the Inn.

These funds will go to each organization on top of participants’ registration fees in either parade.

Oreo had no comment about the feud.

The verdict of Mainx24’s second-favorite grand marshal has yet to be determined. Interested parties would do well to be on hand for the parades down Main Street this Saturday morning.
