Two Chattanooga Fire Department firefighters, representing their department and the state of Tennessee, placed eighth in the Firefighter Combat Challenge's World Challenge XXI this weekend.

Lt. Eric Stone and senior firefighter Daryl Horn competed in tandem in Myrtle Beach, S.C., to take home an eighth-place finish in the five-event physical challenge.

Firefighters from around the world competed in the internationally televised event, trying to complete the tasks in the fastest time. Participants came from Canada, Germany, France, Poland and more.

Stone and Horn have been competing since 2010, and they finished 29th during that competition. The pair finished 14th last year.

Stone said he is optimistic about next year after finishing in the top 10 this year.

"We're in striking distance now," Stone said in a prepared statement.
