RALEIGH, N.C. — Chattanooga’s Niko Brown won the 197-pound title of the Wolfpack Open this weekend at the Wolfpack Open, while five other Mocs wrestlers placed at the tournament.
Brown won four matches to improve to 12-1 on the season. He pinned N.C. State’s Josh Lackey (1:48) in his first match of the tournament before collecting three straight decisions. His other wins came over Virginia Tech’s Darren Hankins (7-4), West Virginia’s A.J. Vizcarrondo (7-2) and Old Dominion’s Kevin Beasley (6-4) in the finals.
Sophomore Nick Soto, currently No. 8 in the nation at 125 pounds, placed second. He won three matches before falling to North Carolina’s Nathan Kraisser (7-4) in the finals.
Senior Dean Pavlou also had a second-place finish in the 141-pound bracket. Pavlou, No. 20 in the nation, was pinned by UNC’s Evan Henderson (3:27) in the finals.
Freshmen Marvin Lopez and John Lampe both placed sixth at 133 and 165, respectively. Both Lampe and Lopez finished the competition 3-2.
The Mocs host second-ranked Iowa at Maclellan Gym for their home opener on Friday at 7 p.m.
