Both Republican and Democratic candidates for Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District have been scheduled to deliver remarks and present their platforms at Thursday's meeting of the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce's North Hamilton County Council.

Republicans Weston Wamp, Ron Bhalla, and surrogates for Rep. Chuck Fleischmann and Scottie Mayfield will participate, along with Democrats Bill Taylor and Dr. Mary Headrick. The candidates will have five minutes and the opportunity to answer any questions following their speeches.

The event will be the first in which candidates from both parties will be on hand and precedes two recently scheduled Republican debates, both of which Mayfield declined to participate in.

In a news release, Tom Walsh, president of the council, said he hoped the public would feel compelled to attend.

"We're delighted to provide the public with an opportunity to interface with our 3rd District Congressional candidates and their representatives," Walsh said. "Making informed decisions about who we elect to represent our community in Congress is vitally important to our future. We hope the public will view this as an opportunity to educate themselves and engage in health discussions about both the candidates and the issues at hand."

The meeting, held at Budweiser of Chattanooga, is open to the public. Admission is $10, and lunch will be provided.

Updated @ 9:08 a.m. on 05/16/12 to correct the admission price, which is $10 for all attendees, both members and nonmembers.
