Headlined by Southern Conference player of the year Michelle Fuzzard, the UTC Lady Mocs placed a record nine players on the All-SoCon softball teams Monday.
Fuzzard, the Lady Mocs senior designated player and pitcher, became the league’s first two-time player of the year award winner since Furman's Julie Glasser in 1995-97. After winning the league's highest honor a year ago, Fuzzard delivered another stellar campaign in 2012. The four-time SoCon first-team selection ranks in the top five in the conference in batting average (.424), hits (59), runs (48), homers (14), doubles (16), total bases (117), walks (37) and slugging (.872).
Fuzzard is joined on the All-SoCon first team by senior catcher Vivian Morimoto, junior second baseman Sara Poteat and junior first baseman Kasey Tydingco.
Five Lady Mocs—senior shortstop Jessica Traxler, sophomore outfielder Stephanie Rieck, freshmen pitcher Taylor Deason, third baseman Sarah Beth Roberts and outfielder Cheyenne Willis—were named to the All-SoCon second team.
The previous record for number of all-conference selections was eight, set in 2008 by Georgia Southern.
In addition to their second-team nods, Deason, Roberts and Willis were also named to the SoCon all-freshman team.
Having closed the regular season with a three-game sweep of UNC Greensboro, UTC brings a nine-game winning streak into the Southern Conference tournament beginning Wednesday. The second-seeded Lady Mocs are 37-14 overall and 20-2 in league play and will face seventh-seeded Elon in the conference tournament.
Boasting a lineup with all nine starters batting over .300, the Lady Mocs lead the country with a .353 team batting average. UTC has also tied the school record for home runs in a season with 58.
