The Chattanooga Salvation Army will use its recent grant of slightly more than $2,000 to continue to feed the hungry in the greater Chattanooga area.

The $2,059.94, given on behalf of the Food Lion Charitable Foundation, is part of Food Lion's Feeding the Hungry Grant.

"The Salvation Army is indeed fortunate to have the gracious partnership of Food Lion,” said Major Algerome Newsome, area commander of the Chattanooga Salvation Army. “Their assistance in helping us reach out to the hungry is invaluable."

The Salvation Army Social Services Ministry will interview low-income individuals and families to ensure eligibility for special assistance. Food boxes or food vouchers will then be provided to the needy. Their office is located at 2140 E. 28th Street at the East Lake Corps Community Center.  The contact number to set up an appointment is 423-305-6200.

Established in 2001, the Food Lion Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities they serve. The Food Lion family of stores, based in Salisbury, N.C., operates more than 1,300 supermarkets either directly or through affiliated entities. Food Lion employs approximately 74,000 associates in 11 states.

The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in 1865, has been supporting those in need without discrimination for 130 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from the Salvation Army each year through an array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. Eighty-two cents of every dollar spent is used to carry out those services in 5,000 communities nationwide. For more information, go to www.salvationarmyusa.org.
