Photos: PARK(ing) Day 2011

Public spaces created in metered parking spots around Chattanooga

For the third straight year Chattanooga has been one of 183 cities across the globe participating in the annual PARK(ing) Day event where individuals, businesses and groups transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks.

A total of 14 locations were "parked" on Friday morning and afternoon on Main Street, Frazier Avenue, Coolidge Park, Market Street, and Broad Street.

A piano park, an interactive art machine park, an art bike park and a photo booth park were just a few of the unusual themed spaces created for the day-long event.

In 2010, 850 park spaces were created in 183 cities across six continents and 30 countries, according to the official website.

"The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out," the event's website states.
