When the Young Professionals Association of Chattanooga took a survey earlier this year they found it was important to members to support local food initiatives, and an upcoming event will give them a chance to do just that.
YPAC is partnering with George Dickel for a event that will benefit Crabtree Farms, which has been producing sustainably grown fruits and vegetables along with volunteers in the Chattanooga community since 2001.
“Crabtree Farms centers on bringing sustainable agriculture to Chattanooga, and this mission was a perfect match with the interests of our young professional community,” YPAC spokeswoman Maggie Hodges said. “In fact, many of our YPAC members participate in Crabtree Farms’ programs.”
A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Crabtree Farms and the rest of the money will go back to YPAC programs.
Crab Tree Farms’ mission is to connect local residents with the local foodshed, Melanie Mayo with Crabtree Farms said.
The nonprofit started in 1998 out of a public-private partnership to renew urban agriculture in Chattanooga, she also said.
“The proceeds donated from YPAC’s event will benefit our Dig In Kids education programs,” Mayo also said. “We teach children hands-on about gardening and where their food comes from. We also reach out to schools to help with school gardens and special education programs."
YPAC, which has about 200 paid members and nearly 700 people who support the group otherwise, cherishes having George Dickel as a sponsor, Hodges said.
“Not only is George Dickel a national brand, but they also have local ties,” she said of the Tennessee whiskey maker. “So, the partnership perfectly blends our young professionals with a national company that is committed to investing in Chattanooga’s future leaders.”
